New York. - The Gents in Blue struggled offensively once again at any stadium not called Yankee Stadium as they fell to their Eastern Division rivals the Philadelphia Union by the score of 1-0. It was a huge night for Philly's Alexander Bedoya; scoring his first goal of the season on a header at the 67th minute that proved to be the difference maker and moving the Union into a points tie with NY (albeit with one more match played) on the season. Frankly it was a fantastic bang bang 1 timer from Kai Wagner to Bedoya but it was also a clear miss by Defender Malte Amundsen who was completely unaware that Bedoya was coming up alongside him and knew his mistake immediately based on the reaction.

The opportunities were there throughout for NY, as once again they out shot their opponents; this time 15-7 (although only 2 were on goal which was absolutely telling) & maintained ball possession for 60% of the time. Truth be told, this was a slog of a match with very little of interest if you're a New York FC fan so I'm going to toss some stats out there for the analytical types like myself:

7 Notes (instead of my usual five)

1) This team has pounded their opponents this season in shots; overall out shooting their opponents 258-130. Full deep dive? 82-34 in shots on goal at Yankee Stadium, 46-24 at “home” at Red Bull Arena & 130-72 on the road.

2) Last night's loss breaks a 6 game unbeaten streak for the New York, having gotten 14 points out of a possible 18 & going 4-0-2.

3) On the season, NY is a solid 7-2-1 at home (including Red Bull Arena) while the 2-4-3 road record remains a concern. This doesn't bode well as barring something unlikely, all playoff roads will go through New England.

4) Taty Castellanos leads New York in just about every offensive category: Goals with 8, Minutes with 1640, 86 shots (more than double 2nd place Maxi Moralez) Shots on Target with 38 and is the only player on the team to start all 19 matches.

5) Despite struggling outside the Bronx offensively, their defense has been stellar throughout the season; allowing the fewest shots this season of any team in MLS with 62 (LAFC is second at 64) & currently rank tied for 3rd overall with 19 goals allowed.

6)  They play as the road team at “home” on Saturday against the Red Bulls in Harrison. The other NY team is struggling to keep their playoff hopes alive, currently sitting 5 points behind Montreal with a game in hand for the last playoff spot.

7) New York has 8 more matches at home, 4 at Yankee Stadium and 4 at Red Bull Arena. Their next match at home will be against 1st place New England at Yankee Stadium on the 28th. Last time the two met was June 19 at RBA where the Gents in Blue lead in nearly every category, but lost 3-2.
