Newark. - The Seton Hall Pirates fell at home to the #23 ranked Creighton Blue Jays at home at Prudential Center in Newark Wednesday night by the score of 75-62. Al-Amir Dawes had a great day from beyond the arc leading the Pirates (15-10/8-6 Big East) with 19 points but it was no match for the four Blue Jays (16-8/10-3 BE) players in double figures led by Baylor Scheierman’s 19 points and 9 rebounds. Both teams kept each other in check for most of the first half, with each run by one team promptly answered by the other. The Pirates took the lead around seven minutes into the game 16-15 on two made free throws by Kadary Richmond. Creighton countered with an 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to go up 23-16. However, the Blue Jays lead didn’t go past seven points in the first half as the Pirates chipped away before going on an 8-0 run of their own towards the end of the half to briefly take the lead 39-38. A floater from Ryan Nembhard edged Creighton ahead going into the half 40-39. The Pirates came out hot to start the second frame with an Al-Amir Dawes three pointer kicking off a 10-3 Seton Hall run over the first four minutes to go up 49-43 for their biggest lead of the game. Creighton punched back with a 10-2 run of their own to take the lead back 53-51. A layup by KC Ndefo and a dunk from Tray Jackson gave the Pirates back the lead at 55-53 with 11:59 left in the second half. At this point the Pirates ran into a blue brick wall, going scoreless for the next five and a half minutes and scoring only seven points for the rest of the game. The Pirates held the line on defense for a while holding Creighton to their own three minute scoring drought. Dawes broke The Hall’s scoreless stretch with a floater at 6:23 to bring them back to within four points, but the Pirates got no closer than that. A few minutes later Baylor Scheierman hit three pointers on two straight possessions from the same spot on the left side of the arc right in front of Creighton coach Greg McDermott to put the Blue Jays up 69-60 with 3:27 left, crushing whatever hope the Pirates had left and leaving them fading down the stretch to a 75-62 defeat. News and Notes: Dre Davis missed his third straight game with an ankle injury sustained against Butler on January 28th. Seton Hall travels down the Turnpike for their next game Saturday at 8pm on FS1 against Villanova at Wells Fargo Center. Creighton’s next game is at home on Saturday at 2pm on Fox against #21 UConn.
