New York. - Playing in the Hudson River Derby for the second match in only 4 days, NYCFC once again feel short of expectations, this time unexpectedly being shut out for the first time at home and falling 1-0 to rival Red Bulls.

Despite maintaining possession for 65% of the match with a far greater accuracy of passes, the Gents In Blue were outshot 6-4 on shots on goal with the exception of a couple late chances, did little to challenge Red Bull goalie Carlos Coronel and frankly just felt sloppy for much of the match. NYCFC came out of the gate well and controlled the action but around the 20 minute mark seemed to settle down and slowly lost the ability to the put the ball towards the net. Then at the 43 minute mark Midfielder (and Bronx native) Omir Fernandez squared up a one time cross from Kyle Duncan for what would turn out to be the game winner.

The second half saw the Red Bulls continue to apply pressure, first on a goal by Patryk Klimala that was waived off for offsides followed by a great shot from Dru Yearwood that required a diving save by Sean Johnson and another from John Tolkin. Credit where it's due, Johnson's performance tonight was a huge reason only one goal was given up instead of being a blowout.

NYCFC, meanwhile, had a pair of chances in the second half that came up empty. First at the 71st minute but Taty Castellanos's shot off a corner kick was denied by Coronel's reaction save, followed by the 78th minute from Jesus Medina forcing Coronel to come up with another huge save.

In the end, a disappointing end of a week of Hudson River Derby (although round three comes up after the International Break). NY will look to rebound Wednesday in Chicago.

5 Notes:

1) NYCFC has struggled in the month of September. 1-3-2 for just 5 points in 6 matches, scoring 1 goal or less in 4 of those matches.

2) Last night was only the second match this month where NYCFC has NOT gotten a red card; having 5 in 4 matches this month. As a result New York is 1st overall in red cards for a team with 7. By comparison three teams are tied for second with 4.

3) NYCFC has been strong in the final 15 minutes of a match; currently sitting at 9 goal which is good for 5th overall.

4) Close competition: New York currently sits in 3rd place with 39 points in 26 matches 8th place Atlanta sits just 3 points back with 36 points in 26 matches.

5) Coming up this week they return to Chicago to take on the 6-15-6 Chicago Fire. Last time around on August 4 they played to a 0-0 tie at SeatGeek Stadium. The Fire are a far better team at home than on the road, going 5-5-5 at home versus a woeful 1-10-1 on the road.
